The forum is basically an alternative view of the newsgroup based
message database. Since newsgroups use an e-mail compatible exchange
format, a (publicly visible) e-mail address plus a display name ("full
name" may not actually be the best term) is the natural choice. A
separate user name on the other hand couldn't be displayed in a
meaningful way over NTTP.
